COVID-19 associated mucormycosis during the second wave of pandemic in South India

Background: The incidence of mucormycosis has risen more rapidly during the second wave compared with first COVID-19 in India. As other parts country, our state also experience surge cases among patients admitted hospitals. associated (CAM) which was new for whole medical community no prior experience. In this context a prospective descriptive study conducted.Methods: done at public sector tertiary care hospital Kerala, South India from April to June 2021 prospectively.Results: During period three months total 40 were reported diagnosis mucormycosis. Sex wise 29 (72.5%) males and 11 (27.5%) females. mean age 55.8+16 years. Thirty (83%) confirmed be CAM by real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) test. one (79%) them have got risk factor diabetes mellitus. Twenty six (65%) had undergone steroid treatment. Other factors hypoxia 10 (25%), zinc supplement 30 (75%), steam inhalation 14 (35%), intensive unit (ICU) admission 6 (15%). All rhino orbito cerebral type. Majority 26 received surgical outcome 16 (40%) discharged after cure case fatality rate 4 (10%).Conclusions: highly increasing above 50, diabetes, use supplementation. health workers should made aware importance glycemic control, over steroids.
